MIDWIVES PROTECTION PROGRAM
The Midwives Protection Program (MPP) originated and is administered and delivered by the Risk Management Branch (RMB) of the Ministry of Finance in conjunction with the Ministry of Health and the Midwives Association of British Columbia (MABC). This self-insured program has been in existence since February 1, 2002 as a response to a hard insurance market (liability insurance crisis). MPP covers the professional practice liability concerns of registered midwives who are members of MABC and who are in good standing with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives. The core coverages provided are Malpractice Liability, Criminal Defense Reimbursement, Coroner’s Inquest Legal Assistance and Disciplinary Matters Assistance.
MANDATE
Our mandate is to provide professional risk management services including the provision of direct or indirect risk management advice, education, coverage administration and claims and litigation management services to MABC and by extension its members.
CORE SERVICES
Our core services are:
- Risk Management Advisory and Education Services
The purpose of the Program’s risk management advisory service component is to assist in the identification, analysis, evaluation and management of risks.
The service has three components:
- Centralized Consultation
The Program provides guidance, advice and information regarding issues, problems or situations arising in the midwifery profession that constitute perceived or actual risk exposures.
- Risk Management Education
The Program organizes resources for the provision of basic and custom educational programming to registered midwives and MABC on risk management topics, principles and practices. The services are organized to match expertise to specific audiences and desired topics.
- Communications
The Program produces publications and other media related to the management of the Program, as well as communications relevant to risk, coverage, claims and operational issues faced by registered midwives and MABC.
- Centralized Consultation
- Coverage Administration including Claims and Litigation Management
The coverage agreement provides malpractice liability and describes terms, conditions and limitations of protection afforded to registered midwives under MPP. In addition to providing claims and litigation management services relative to this coverage, MPP also provides advisory services relating to questions or situations that arise relative to coverage under the Program.
