About MPP
The Midwives Protection Program (MPP) originated and is administered and delivered by the Risk Management Branch (RMB) of the Ministry of Finance in conjunction with the Ministry of Health and the Midwives Association of British Columbia (MABC). MPP is an actuarially valuated program of self-insurance providing professional liability coverage for BC’s registered midwives who are members of MABC, in good standing with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives, are current in their contribution/premium payments, and who are acting within their Scope of Practice. The core coverages provided by MPP are Malpractice Liability, Criminal Defense Reimbursement, Coroner’s Inquest Legal Assistance and Disciplinary Matters Assistance.

MANDATE
​Our mandate is to provide professional risk management services including the provision of direct or indirect risk management advice, education, coverage administration and claims and litigation management services to MABC and by extension its members.

Risk Management Advisory and Education Services​
​
The purpose of the Program’s risk management advisory service component is to assist in the identification, analysis, evaluation and management of risks.

Coverage Administration including Claims and Litigation Management ​​
​
The coverage agreement provides malpractice liability and describes terms, conditions and limitations of protection afforded to registered midwives under MPP. In addition to providing claims and litigation management services relative to this coverage, MPP also provides advisory services relating to questions or situations that arise relative to coverage under the Program.

COMPONENTS OF CORE SERVICES
1. Centralized Consultation - The Program provides guidance, advice and information regarding issues, problems or situations arising in the midwifery profession that constitute perceived or actual risk exposures.
2. Risk Management Education - The Program organizes resources for the provision of basic and custom educational programming to registered midwives and MABC on risk management topics, principles and practices. The services are organized to match expertise to specific audiences and desired topics.
3. Communications - The Program produces publications and other media related to the management of the Program, as well as communications relevant to risk, coverage, claims and operational issues faced by registered midwives and MABC.
